How Will We Know When It's Safe To Return?: 5 Keys

I don't know how you, or some others, may feel, but, personally, I believe it's probably not wise, to decide, when it's safe and smart to reopen America, in some semblance of a new normal, based upon the opinions, personal/ political agenda, and/ or, self - interest, of those politicians and public officials, whose response is, anything similar to, the cure is worse than the disease! How many more must die, or be inflicted by this horrific illness/ virus, before we witness some leadership from the Federal government? While, here, in New York, Governor Andrew Cuomo, is showing empathetic, caring, true leadership, the same cannot be said, on a Federal level. Whether we consider, how ill-prepared we were (although warned by WHO, and our own CDC), the President's rhetoric stating it was a hoax, and/ or politically motivated, Trump's constantly changing messaging, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell's partisanship, etc, wouldn't we be better served, by listening to the professionals, and public health experts, rather than some politically motivated messaging? With that in mind, this article will attempt to, briefly, consider, examine, review, and discuss, when it will be wise to return to work, and a more normal routine, and some of the smart - steps, which may become the new norm.
1. Flatten the curve: Unless/ until, we flatten the curve, meaning, lower the admissions rate to hospitals, the mortality rate, etc, it's essential to continue Social Spacing, using face coverings, etc. Although, several states, such as New York, have apparently reached that point, now, we must be even more vigilant, because public health experts, warn us, the potential, second wave, may be even worse!
2. Testing and tracking: Unless/ until, we have broad - based, meaningful testing, and a way to track, the disease, the health of our citizens, is, at - risk! Although President Trump says we have tested more than any other nation, and have sufficient supplies, etc, it certainly seems like another of his misstatements!
3. Safety measures must be created and, in - place: What should we do to effectively, safely, create, and implement safety measures, to ensure it is safe, to open our economy? I can envision, occupancy limitations, face - cover requirements, restricting numbers permitted to enter, and, thermal scanning, etc, as a path to reopening, safely. Without some smart strategy, why would people, be willing, to expose themselves to the health risks?
4. Common sense: As I often state, especially, when it comes to public policy, and leadership, common sense is anything but common, and may be one of the rarest qualities, we witness! When the Lieutenant Governor of Texas, says, people dying is an acceptable alternative to keeping these measures, in - place, at best, it must never be considered normal! Recently, a reporter asked Cuomo, a question, declaring the cure must never be worse than the ailment, New York's Governor, stopped her, in her tracks, and said, Because the alternative is death. When she said, some people will become depressed, and desperate, and may commit suicide, he said, They don't have the right to kill others, or me!
5. Smart public health, first!: The health and well - being of the public, must be the top priority! If we are led by the advice of the experts and professionals, and data (instead of political rhetoric), in the longer - run, the public will be best - served, and represented!
Wake up, America, and tell President Trump, Senator McConnell, and those, who are willing to sacrifice life, for economic benefit, that's not acceptable! Will you demand more, and better, or lose our identity, and perhaps, 2 to 4% of our population, unnecessarily?
